Romancing The Ebook – South Africa's Romance Ebook Store, Ebook Diva, Launches

This month, New Holland Publishing, in conjunction with Booksite Digital, a division of Booksite Afrika, South Africa's largest book distributor, launched eBook Diva (www.ebookdiva.com). eBook Diva specialises in Romantic Fiction eBooks, which is by far the most popular category of eBooks.

Because of the digital nature of eBooks, publishers can now make reading a more interactive experience. And in addition to being a world-class eBook store, eBook Diva will create a free writers' community which will allow fans of the Romantic Fiction genre to create and share their own eBooks with a community of readers who will be able to comment on their work. Aspiring authors can even personalise their eBooks by choosing fonts and book covers, while retaining ownership of the copyright to their work, which will allow them to publish their work.
eBooks are a smart choice for the environment, and the ease and convenience that they offer make them a popular choice for many people. Today, an increasing number of people are accessing information from portable media devices such as eReaders, iPods, laptops and cell phones and eBooks are the perfect complement to these devices. Because most people carry these with them, they are now able to have their entire library available.

eBooks will probably never completely replace printed books, but the demand for eBooks exists and is growing rapidly. The International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) has announced that the US trade retail eBook sales to August 2009 are 120% up on last year YTD, compared to the sales of books in general, which are up only 3.6% for the year, as tracked by the Association of American Publishers (AAP).

Internationally, leading publishers including Random House, Harlequin Mills and Boon, Pan Macmillan, Penguin, Simon and Schuster and HarperCollins are investing heavily in the growing eBook market. And in South Africa, publishers are starting to put eBook strategies in place to meet the growing demand.

While eBooks can easily be purchased and read on a computer, dedicated devices called eReaders are quickly becoming more popular and affordable. These devices are usually the size of a slim paperback, can store thousands of eBooks, newspapers, magazines and other electronic documents. At the end of last year, two eBook Readers became available in South Africa (Amazon's Kindle, as well as Elonex eBook Reader 511EB). And just last month, the Foxit eSlick eBook Reader was also released in South Africa.

Using an electronic reader in South Africa

The only place to order a Kindle from is Amazon, don`t let South African dealers pull a fast one on you; chances are they also ordered through Amazon and have just marked the device up.

They will tell you that because they ordered in bulk they are saving you the shipping costs, do yourself a favour, check out the link below, I am certain that by ordering directly from Amazon will actually save you a few bucks.
Beware of the rubbish that retailers and other naysayers will attempt to feed you. Some of the common myths are:

1. "Amazon does not ship to South Africa." This is simply not true. Amazon will ship to South Africa from its USA and European stores.

2. "Kindle is not officially available in South Africa." The Kindle was officially launched in South Africa in 2009.

3. "Shipping from the USA is risky and costly if the package is stopped by S.A. Customs" If anything goes wrong with the shipping, Amazon will send you a replacement. All items are shipped to South Africa using reputable couriers; your Kindle will be at your door in about a week or two. I have yet to hear of anyone being charged by customs for a Kindle. It is an IT item and is not subject to ad valorem taxes.

Remember to tell Amazon what country you are in when ordering the Kindle (Live outside of the US option).

For my brothers in other far flung locals, the Kindle works great for you to, connectivity in Kenya is great as well as any other place with 3G connectivity The Amazon services are light on their network demands and the Kindle 3 is a great way to get reading material when you are far from a book store.

Some features include:

Built In Dictionary with Instant Lookup
It is virtually impossible to carry a dictionary with any book you read, but the Kindle comes with all necessary information for a reader. The New Oxford American Dictionary with over 250,000 definitions is incorporated with the device so that you are never interrupted while reading again to look up a word in a dictionary

Wireless Access to Wikipedia
With the purchase of an Amazon kindle in South Africa the worlds most exhaustive and up-to-date encyclopedia, Wikipedia.org is at your finger tips, it comes built in with Kindle and you can look up people, places, events , and more from anywhere.

Search
Kindle has a QWERTY keyboard which makes it easy to search within a book, within your library, in the web or in the Kindle Store.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Kindle Book book review

A notable figure dies by the climax of the fresh Harry Potter book; people who annoy easily may feundergo done in myself. It's not at all that "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is longwinded, positively. In places, it rises to a pitch looking like suspense, or at least a casual curiosity concerning what might become of next. No, the main problem is that J.K. Rowling has now recorded six of those bricks. Even if they were growing better, they're necessarily not growing any fresher.

To update folks who haven't already read the books, the new story mainly finds Harry suffering with crises both arcane and mundane. On the one hand, intimations abound of nearing Armageddon -- as you might await for a series probably one book shy of the decisive battle in the middle first-class and evil. But Rowling also finds time for all her established wizard-school shenanigans, and Harry puts in long hours mediating among Ron and Hermione, his unfortunately yearning friends.

The fantasy starts at the notably unmagical address of 10 Downing St., where an unknown British prime minister is coping with a secretive offense of crummy news. Suffering has spilled over from Harry's life into ours. Matters develop so far that, by book's end, a prolonged fight will leave the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry partly in ruins. Like all the elite writers for inexperienced people, Rowling knows that kids can deal with a lot more belief than they most often get credit for. Outside it, in fact, they start to gather they're being patronized, or conned.

Exact people and other killjoys will see all this gloom as a warning of our bizarre times. Students Go thorugh sensors on their way into and out of Hogwarts. A security curfew is in effect for most of the book, and reference is made to some type of prying search that Rowling shrewdly calls a "Probity Probe." There's even a trivial presence dubbed Shunpike, never seen but only talked about, who functions entirely as a martyr to Guantanamo-style preventive confinement. (Clearly, Rowling's low-key left wing doesn't end with Hogwarts' model racial pluralism.)
Close by all those scary portents, of course, we also appreciate the customary companion of wizarding lessons and Quidditch games. Harry has a brand-new professor in his Potions course, Horace Slughorn -- an annoying and altogether likely social climber who sucks up to his own students, provided they come from governing enough families. Helping Harry in Slughorn's class is an ancient text annotated by an user calling myself the "half-blood prince,".

All this Buffy-style joining of kid's product and saving the world is, of course, act of Harry Potter's tremendous appeal. It by and large builds to some ominous showdown that leaves our heroes wounded but driven, and the forces of secrecy routed but regrouping -- and all things else kind of a great deal back where it begun.

Until now. As everybody and his Aunt Lillian must formerly know, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is the penultimate book in the chain. To tide us over, this one often plays like a meager overture to the climax to arrive -- a finale that, if Rowling has been employed toward it all those years, might absolutely feel less like an undercard , and more like the basic event.

If only Rowling didn't so usually fall back on tame cryptic shootouts. A sentence like "He put his head down and jolted forward, closely avoiding a blast because erupted over his head" is flat and familiar, no matter what of whether who explosion comes from a magic wand or an M-16.

And now, a word about adore. a lot has been made of Rowling's attempts over the ultimate couple of books to assert the hormonal belief concerning what it's simply like for a group of friends to go from 11 years old, in the first book, to roughly 16. To her credit, at least within doors the constraints of an epic suitable for students, she hasn't ostracized the plangent crushes and unbearable jealousies that not at all only teenagers are heir to. Maddeningly, though, the novel ends with Harry telling his new ladylove, "I can't be involved with you anymore. We've got to stop seeing every other. We can't be together ... I've got things to do completely now."

This might conclude passed outside comment if monkishness hadn't become close to a prerequisite for saving the area lately. not just Harry but earlier films of Batman and Superman appear all contained scenes where the hero accepts that fighting evil and having a girlfriend just don't mix. But why? Why, in a culture otherwise captivated with the lives of total strangers -- at least so long as they're halfway famous -- seem we become so puritanical about characters we actually like?

In the fresh book's top scene, Harry's mentor Dumbledore solemnly tells him that, "You are protected by your ability to admire." In other words, the only thing that males Harry different from his evil attacker is the simple capacity for human affection. And yet for Harry, as for the most recent breed of movie loner-superhero, to maintain be in love with is finally observed as a distraction or, worse, an instability. When the seventh and finishing Potter story finally arrives, would it be too most to hope that the hero prevails, not because he can manfully let go his capacity for love, but because he can't?

Kindle Books Are More Important Than Kindle Readers To Amazon

Since its launch in November 2007, the Kindle electronic book reader has been a great product for Amazon. Amazon's strong association with both books and electronics was a marriage made in heaven and the Kindle, after an upgrade to Kindle 2.0 in February of 2009 followed by the introduction of the large display Kindle DX model in the summer of the same year, went on to become Amazon's top selling product.

Over the 2009 festive season, the Kindle reader became the most gifted Amazon item ever - and, on Christmas day 2009, the number of Kindle book downloads was greater than the number of physical books sold for the first time ever. This was more than likely due to people who were lucky enough to find a Kindle under the tree experimenting with their new readers - and many of the books downloaded would have been free - but it was still a landmark event for both Amazon and the Kindle.

Amazon did seem to be a slightly reluctant manufacturer on occasions however. They went out of their way to make sure that Kindle books could be read without a Kindle reader. At the moment, Amazon has released free Kindle "Apps" for a wide variety of different devices - many of which would be considered to be the Kindle's competitors. These include the PC, the Apple Mac, the iPod Touch, the iPhone, the iPad, the Blackberry smart phone and any device running Android. Amazon looked to be their own competition at times.

However, the method in Amazon's madness became clear after the release of the Apple iPad. This saw the price of e-book readers fall as many consumers rushed to buy Apple's new device which, amongst its many functions, was suitable for use as an e-book reader. However, although the price of e-book reader hardware was falling, the average price of the e-books to read on these devices was rising.

The main reason behind this was the deal which Apple had negotiated with the big publishing houses prior to the iPad's launch. This allowed publishers to fix the price for the e-book versions of their publications at whatever level they wished - under the condition that the e-book wouldn't be sold at a lower price for use with any other reader - the Kindle for example. Amazon's policy of pricing e-books at $ 9.99 or less was pretty well destroyed overnight - it was starting to look as if the iPad wasn't just a "Kindle Killer" but that it was going to put paid to Amazon's plans for Kindle books as well.

However, upon closer examination, Amazon's release of Kindle Apps for so many different devices starts to make a lot of sense. Each App is actually an outlet for Kindle books - and with a higher average e-book price, Amazon will be able to sell Kindles for less but still make money over the lifetime of the reader by selling their Kindle books at higher prices. Even if the iPad were to totally decimate Kindle sales - an unlikely event - Kindle books will keep selling. And, should some other mobile computer, smart phone or reader come along then there will no doubt be "an app for that" as well.

Kindle vs Nook vs iPad, Which E-reader is better ?

Recently , the E-book reader market is developing on an unprecedented scale, hardware price is declining , contents are more abundant ,and free content hit all- time high especially . So far , this market were divided up by a few mainstream manufacturers , like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Sony and Apple. First three companies published their under 200USD products. More and more new appliances which were exclusively used in reading will continue to consolidate the status of Apple iPad in this market .Also, the new iPad 2 related Accessories iStores are hot in the Internet now.

This is the best chance for users to use multiple ways to evaluate which product is the most suitable one for them . Users could pick up the ideal product via the following 6 questions.

1. What's your target price ?

Simply consider about price , these no famous commercial brands product price is from 99 USD to 129 USD, like Aluratek Libre and Kobo eReader . We highly recommend user to order the latest version of Amazon and Barnes &Noble , the price is 139USD and 149USD respectively .

If user wish to have a reader with a built-in mobile data service ,which could download books, magazines and newspaper all times and places under AT&T network service , they could pay extra 50USD to update to 3G verb of Kindle or Nook , the price is 189USD and 199USD (wifi service no charge).

If users want to have touch screen support, they can consider about Sony Reader Pocket Edition PRS-350 with price 179USD. Sadly, this reader is lack of any kind of wifi function , users have to download books to PC, then send to reader via UBS line . (in order to get built-in wifi and 3G support, users must pay 299usd for Sony Reader Daily Edition PRS-950 , that reader equipped with 7 inch screen).

Amazon big screen Kindle DX and Apple iPad now pulling the high stream ebook reader forward . Kindle DX price is 379USD, iPad price is from 499USD (EMS memory 16GB, wifi connection only ) to 829USD (EMS memory 64GB , both Wifi and 3G).

These two devices price are higher than former ones , but iPad is a competitive product of laptop and netbook . iPad has more advanced functions , like colorful touch screen , full movement video , thousands of appliances , which these low price ebook readers are not possessed.

The new iPad 2

2. What's your ideal touch screen size ?

You should consider about the reader's size in advance before you buy it even if you never plan to bring it outdoor . You will face a question including weight and size when you wish to read . So far , the smallest and lightest ebook reader is that Sony Reader Pocket Edition PRS-350 we talked , its touch screen is 5inch.unpacked weight is only 5.5 ounce , and packed weight is 8.8 ounce. New version of Kindle is 15% lighter than the last version ; Nook is 11.2 ounce.

If buyers wish to have big screen reader, optional choices are Kindle DX or Apple iPad , the unpacked weight is 1.2pound and 1.5 pound respectively . Some of people thought these two readers are too weight to long time reading .

Otherwise , all ebook readers supply function to chancge words size , even a small screen could shows more contents than book, magazines and newpapers . It means smaller screen doesn't means user to lose book's interests .

Kindle VS iBooks

Most of the discussion about eBook reading on the iPad vs. the Kindle centers on the devices themselves.

Now that I've had my iPad for a couple of months and my new Kindle 3 for 10 days (I've had a Kindle 1 since they first came out), I can say that I would prefer to read most books on the Kindle 3. If the book has a lot of graphics or photos, particularly color ones, the iPad naturally wins. But the screen glare gets annoying rather quickly for any long-form reading.

I love the iPad for web browsing, quick information look-ups, weather and news apps, and a few other things while seated comfortably in my easy chair in the evening.

Besides Apple's own iBooks app, I also have the Kindle for iPad, Nook, Kobo, and Stanza apps on my iPad.

If I do decide to read a book on the iPad, I am most likely to use the Kindle for iPad app (even color graphics and photos look great on the Kindle for iPad app).

Why?

The Kindle for iPad is a far superior application.

The iBooks app looks nice but the browsing, searching, and buying functions are awkward and not very functional (especially the browse and search functions).

The Nook app switches to the Safari browser to find and buy an eBook and does not automatically return me to the Nook app and download the book Lousy design. I have also had several instances where I cannot get the book to download to the Nook app.

The Kobo app is not much better, and I don't care much for the functionality of its reading interface.

The Kindle app, on the other hand, brings all of Amazon's content (far more than iBooks) and its excellent browse and search capabilities (which are both better and much faster) to the iPad. On the top, Amazon's great one-click buying experience works perfectly on the iPad. Of course, it does switch to the Safari browser but, when you've bought the book, you just click to send it the Kindle for iPad and it takes you right back to the reading app. The book immediately downloads and you can read it right away.

Like iBooks, some Kindle books now have audio and video clips embedded. Those look just as good on the Kindle for iPad as on iBooks.

Some fancy typography and layout "stuff" can only be done in ePub and, thus, won't display as prettily in a Kindle book. But if the designer took care to accommodate the Kindle platform's limitations (while capitalizing on the additional display capabilities when read on the iPad), those Kindle books can provide just as pleasant a reading experience as anything available from iBooks.

And you're far more likely to find the book you were looking for on Amazon than on iBooks.

And if you decide to read the book on your Kindle 3, the text will be just a crisp and the photos and graphics will look great, albeit in B&W, as anything you can read on the iPad.

And that leads to one other factor that I like when reading Kindle books I can read the same book on the Kindle today and the iPad tomorrow (or my iPhone, Blackberry, or Mac if I had one) and both will automatically sync to the last page I read, wherever I read it.

So, despite all the naysayers who insist that the iPad will be the death of the Kindle, I have no doubt that the Kindle will be around for a long time and will be continually updated. Including a color Kindle (maybe even with touch screen) and probably a Kindle that can read both Kindle and ePub format (possibly even alternately from the same downloaded file).

To read more on Amazon's Kindle go to Amazon Kindle review or Kindle reviews or go to Wireless reading device.

Easy Ways to Evaluate the Kobo versus the Kindle

Choosing the right e-book reader is just like choosing clothes, it depends on what you are looking for. Are you looking for something that you can store all your e-books? Do you want readers with updated features? Are you after a sleek design and stylish color or you having your budget to consider?

Since their release in the market, a lot of manufacturers produced their own type of this gadget, but two of the most popular e-book readers are Amazon's Kindle and Borders' Kobo. There has been a consistent Kindle vs kobo comparison on the Internet as to which is the better one.

1. Kindle vs kobo on Price

Although they are in approximately the same price range he Kindle is more expensive than the Kobo. At an extra 40 plus dollars depending on the model that you select the Kobo could save you quite a bit of money.
2. Memory Storage

Kindle can store up to 4GB worth of e-books, magazines, newspapers, blogs, and other electronic and digital media while Kobo, although having an internal memory of 1GB, offers a SDHC card slot that serves as its expandable memory.

3. Supported Formats kindle vs kobo

Kobo supports EPUB, PDF, and TXT format only as compared to Kindle's TXT, TR3, PDF, HTML, AZW, and AZG.

4. Battery Life

In comparing the kindle vs Kobo they both have almost similar battery life, claiming that the battery can last up to 8,000 page turns or approximately two weeks.

5. Physical Features

Kindle has a six-inch e-ink screen that provides different shades of black and white. The Kobo is quite similar to these specifications, but the Border's Kobo weighs less than any Kindle brand. There has been a lot of Kindle versions released since it was first introduced in the market as compared to Kobo, which only has one version at this point in time.

6. Kindle vs kobo: Additional Features

Kobo has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Kindle on the other hand supports Wi-Fi, GSM, and MP3 format for songs. Also, Kindle is 3G enabled, and it's free. It allows its users to buy straight from the Amazon.com website without even having to go online.

The Kindle vs kobo argument still continues up to this day, but of course, it is up to the user to choose the right e-book reader. It's not really a question of which is better over the other, more like what you need and what you can afford.

What's The Best Ebook Reader? Nook vs. Kindle vs. Sony Reader vs. Kobo

It seems every day there are more and more options for choosing an ebook reader. It becomes more and more confusing to choose the best ebook reader for your needs with all the new models available. Let's compare four of the most popular, the Nook vs Kindle vs Sony Reader vs Kobo.

Let's do a simple comparison of some of the basic features of memory, battery life, and other stand-out unique features of each ebook reader.

Nook- The Nook is the only of these devices to offer any sort of color experience, having a 1 inch high color touch navigation screen. The memory capacity of the device is comparable to the other 3 readers with the ability to store up to 1,500 books and titles. However, the memory is expandable to allow more titles with the insertion of an SD card. Battery life is extended to 10 days with the wireless function turned off.

There are two models available, the WiFi only and WiFi + 3G models. 3G wireless service doesn't work in foreign countries.

Kindle 3- The Kindle 3 is the latest updated version of Amazon's ebook reader. Memory capacity is 3,500 books as a standard. Memory is not expandable. The battery life is extended to 30 days with the wireless function turned off.

There are also two models of Kindle available with the WiFi only and WiFi + 3G.

Sony Reader Pocket Edition- Sony has a lot of Reader models, but we will be comparing the "Pocket Edition" because of the comparable price to the Nook, Kindle and Kobo.

The Pocket Edition is a smaller device than the other readers. The reading screen is 5" diagonal vs 6" diagonal, and the device is overall smaller. The memory of the device is 350 books and the battery life is up to 2 weeks reading time in between charges. It should be noted there is no wireless feature with the Sony Reader Pocket Edition. Instead, one hooks up to the computer with a USB to download books.

Kobo- The Kobo from Borders is a newer ebook reader to the market that is gaining some popularity. The Kobo also has a 6" E-Ink screen and has a comparable memory capacity of 1,000 books standard, but can be expanded with an SD card to more. Battery life allows for 2 weeks reading time in between charges.

The most sales have been reported by the Nook and Kindle over the 2010 holiday season and into the new 2011 year. Perhaps it is because of the slightly more robust features of these two ebook readers. Still, it is a close call and will come down to preference when comparing the Nook vs Kindle vs Sony Reader Pocket Edition vs Kobo.

These two are, of course, the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Nobel Nook. Their popularity with e-book reader users puts them way ahead of their rivals.

Although it is easy to narrow the field to just the two contestants, if is much harder to declare one to be the outright winner. The Nook and the Kindle both have massive support from their fans and this keeps the struggle for supremacy going. There are, of course, pros and cons to be considered with both these e reader devices. But, overall, they are very similar in many respects. You can use either one to read newspapers, magazines and books. The manufacturers' specifications for the nook and the Kindle reveal them to be similar in size and weight. The screens are similar in size.

Did we forget the Ipad?

No, but its place in a battle for the title of best e-book reading device is somewhat uncomfortable. It's rather as if a juggler has been pushed into a boxing ring where a fightt is already in progress and encouraged to join in. The Ipad is unquestionably brilliant in all sorts of ways. It has things the other contenders lack. It has color where the Kindle has only black, white and shades of gray. The Ipad has video where the best the Nook can boast is images. If we were to compile a list of the Ipad's features, it would look as if it should pound the other two contestants into submission without any difficulty. But the Ipad doesn't really belong in an e-reader contest.

It is true that the Ipad has all the functionality you could want from an e-reader device. It has a good size screen for reading, it can download electronic books without needing a separate connection to a computer. However, its real strength lies in all the other functions it can perform. If you simply look at how the Ipad performs as an ebook reader and compare that aspect with the Nook and Kindle, it does not look so much like a serious contender.

There are three obvious areas where the Nook and the Kindle beat the Ipad. The first thing to note is the weight difference. While the Nook weighs slightly more than the Kindle, the Ipad weighs almost three times as much as the Kindle. This extra weight makes it uncomfortable to hold while reading for any length of time. The second point is that Amazon and Barnes & Noble offer a much larger number of electronic books than are available for Ipad users, and the book prices are generally lower. The third thing to consider is that the Ipad is quite significantly more expensive than the other two rivals.

This is a case where you need to decide whether it is better to buy a device that is dedicated to doing one thing really well. Do you really want an e-reader that can play music and videos? If you are primarily looking for an e-book reader, it is probably not a good idea to buy a device that does many things well but that has definite limitations when used as an e-reader. You could find yourself paying over the odds for additional functions that you will never use.

Five Best Features of Kindle Book Readers

Kindle book readers are your best friends when traveling, waiting for your doctor's appointment or sitting on the bleachers at a hockey game while your son is at hockey practice. But why should you pick a Kindle over other book readers like the iPad? Knowing which features stand out above the competition makes choosing a Kindle an obvious option.

What's so special about Kindle book readers?

The Amazon Kindle is a class of book reader all its own. Where other book readers are failing miserably in the display department, the Kindle got it right by displaying your book like a real page. It's also significantly less expensive than an iPad or a Samsung Galaxy Tablet.

But instead of just randomly throwing out features, let's break up the Kindle's best qualities into a nice handy list.

1. The Kindle is hand-held: You can totally pick the Kindle up in one hand and read like that. Seriously! Try doing that with the iPad. You'd be so afraid of breaking it due to how heavy and tall it is that you'd dedicate all 10 fingers to it. Not so with Kindle book readers.

2. The Kindle is the least expensive option of all: The Kindle comes with Wifi only or Wifi and 3G access, depending on which model you choose. Both of these are less than $200, which is more than you can say for most other ebook readers, save for the Barnes and Noble Nook.

3. 3G access is free on the Kindle: The extra $30 you pay upfront for a 3G-enabled Kindle lets you browse on 3G networks for free all over the world. The only time Amazon will charge you is if you start downloading huge files over the 3G network. Keep it free and only download new ebooks over a Wifi network.

4. 3G Kindle Book Readers have a better display: Unlike Apple iPads, which can't be read in direct sunlight because of the sheer glare, Kindle devices don't have a backlight, and thus can be read anywhere without a glare. If you intend to read in darker lighting, get yourself a Kindle-lighted cover, which adds a covering case and a backlight to your device for reading late at night or in bed when your spouse is sleeping.

5. You don't need a computer: Just about every other ebook reader requires some kind of connection to a computer, even if only to use it for the first time. But with the Kindle, you can do everything over Wifi or a 3G network, no computer needed.

10 Hints and Tips for Using the Amazon Kindle

The Amazon Kindle is one of the more popular of the e-readers, but by no means one of the first. That distinction belongs to the Rocket eBook and the Softbook introduced in 1998, with the Kindle not appearing until 2007. Nevertheless, it is often best not to be first, and the Kindle ironed out many of the problems associated with previous machines.

In taking the accolade of an 'advancement' in its field, any item of hardware will have introduced innovations and features that the general public might need help with, and here are ten hints and tips on how to get the best from your Kindle, although many of these also apply to other e-readers. These do not refer to how to use the various buttons, or most other aspects of the Kindle that you will learn by reading the Instructions, but they are things that you would only find out through using the device.

1. Read the Instruction Manual

Many technophiles are so confident that they don't ever need to read the manual. However, many of the problems people come across with their Kindle could have been avoided had they done just that, and had 'lowered' themselves to 'read the instructions'! That's what they are there for. However, given that you have done that, here are some other tips for using the Amazon Kindle, most of which are not mentioned in the instructions.

2. Free eBooks to Read

You can get free books from the public domain - in fact over 300,000 of them. Among them are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Grimm's Dairy Tales and many of Mark Twain's, Charles Dickens's and William Shakespeare's works. You can even download the Declaration of Independence free of charge.

Some of these are available on Kindle's own free library, from where you can download selected books using 3G, and because it is an Amazon site, the format is ideal for your Kindle. Project Gutenberg contains a massive selection of eBooks: that is what it was designed for. To render them compatible with the Kindle, just download them in .mobi format. As it is noted in the article "A Review of Websites About eReaders and eBooks", not all of these books are in the public domain, so make sure that you read the copyright license inside the eBook and adhere to its requirements when using it (Digital Book Readers). There are others useful sites, such as Kindlepedia that will change any Wikipedia page into an eBook for your Kindle.

3. Avoiding Image Burn

As with most screen displays, your Kindle screen can suffer from image burn from static text. This can occur if you leave the same page up for any length of time, but there is a way to protect your screen. You can't use a screensaver (yet), but if you refresh the screen by clicking Alt+G then you can resolve the problem.

4. Using Kindle Shortcuts

The Kindle offers you a number of shortcuts. Here are some of the more useful:

Alt+T displays the current time.

Alt+P will play MP3 files you have stored on an SD card.

Alt+ F will go to the next MP3 on the list.

Alt+SHIFT+R will reset your Kindle. Use this soft reset if your Kindle freezes when in use.

Alt+B will bookmark the page you are on.

Alt+SHIFT+G will take a screenshot of the page you are on.

Alt+H will move the cursor one space right when typing.

Alt+J will do the same to the left.

Alt+Backspace will clear all text.

5. Using the Read-to Me Feature

The read-to-me feature is a text to speech option that enables the Kindle to work a bit like an audio book. The speech is computer-generated of course, similar to ordinary PC equivalents using a word library, so it does not flow quite the same as an audio book, but it is good nevertheless. The tip here is that if you are holding the device when you are listening, such as if you are on a train or bus, or are taking a walk, then if you accidentally press the menu button or the space bar, the reading will be stopped. This can be a nuisance, so in such situations it is a good tip to hold your Kindle upside down: you are then less likely to hit these buttons. Even better, don't hold it! Keep it in a bag or a pocket.

6. Find Your Location

Amazon's 3G CDMA module has a location capability that can be used in Google Maps:

Alt+1 - shows your currently location

Alt+2 - shows nearby gas stations

Alt+3 - shows nearby restaurants

Alt+5 - shows a custom keyword used nearby

7. Fast Forwarding

To fast reverse or forward through your book pages: press Alt and hold it down while pressing the Previous or Next keys.

8. Defragmenting your Kindle

When you delete anything from your Kindle, it leaves a space in memory. When you load up a book it will use that space and perhaps some other spaces available, until the whole file is uploaded. This means each of your books could be stored in small areas all over the memory. You can defrag the device by attaching it to your computer and running your computer defrag utility, pointing to the Kindle as the drive to defragment. This can have a remarkable effect on the speed of your Kindle.

9. Newspaper Subscriptions

Many people use their Kindle with a newspaper subscription, but some papers are better suited than others for the Kindle. It makes sense to use a trial copy first: you can get these very cheaply just to try out, so do that first before making your mind up.

10. Saving the Battery with 3G

The Kindle battery life is good, but if you use 3G connectivity then your battery will run down quickly. The only way to turn 3G off is in the settings, so make sure that if you are not using it for a while, go to Settings and turn 3G off. Even if you are not using it, it will still drain your battery unless you do this. Always turn off Wi-Fi when your signal is bad.

These are just 10 hints and tips for using the Amazon Kindle. There are more, but these are some of those that come up most frequently.

kindle 3 reviews

Treat your eyes and brain free from any stress when reading your favorite books. The new Kindle 3 has a quality of a real book paper because of its E ink technology without giving your eyes any strain. The text that you see in screen is very sharp having a static image that doesn't flicker it feels very pleasant to your eyes. You can easily adjust the font size that is right for you. Kindle screen doesn't glow and you can read it directly even in a sunlight therefore, your eyes never gets tired even after how many hours of reading. Lighter and thinner than a real book so you can endure your reading without tiring your hands for hours. It can carry more than 3,500 ebooks pack up your entire book collection without thinking twice. No need to worry for your battery life even if you're on a long trip because a single charge will last up to one month. For two years Kindle never stops developing their best products to master the ultimate reading pleasure that stands out the best among the rest.

What kindle ebook reader type is right for me?

Available Kindles are Kindle 3 with Wi-Fi, Kindle 3 with Wi-Fi + 3G and the Kindle DX (with Wi-Fi + 3G). If your home and office has Wi-Fi coverage and you spent most of the time surfing the net in there the Kindle with Wi-Fi only is for you. If you need to surf the net anywhere without any Wi-Fi hot spot the Wi-Fi + 3G is for you. And if you want a bigger screen to view much wider portion of an ebook the Kindle DX is right for you.

Wi-Fi are almost everywhere in school, office, coffee shop, hotels and it is much faster than the 3G. If you don't have Wi-Fi connection most of the time 3G is a better and it was provided by Amazon for free. I think paying an extra $50 for a Kindle with 3G is very much compensated for your unlimited lifetime usage.

Issues concerning Kindle

Some issues concerning the comparison of Kindle between the Nook and ipad. Both the Nook and iPad are colored and touch screen but after a while the back light will turn off while you're reading it. iPad is the best mp3 player easy to navigate and songs are organized in folders but not the best ebook reader. Nook and iPad weights heavier, it does really matter for an hour of reading it's quite tiring not relaxing. Their battery drains faster last for only 4-6 days and Kindle last for 3-4 weeks. Reading from LCD touch screen is irritating and reading from a Kindle screen is soothing.

Some people say that Kindle battery is irreplaceable and opening your Kindle may void its warranty. Although this is not a problem because Kindle will replace it with free of charge. Moreover, Kindle battery will last for 3-4 weeks it means that you will charge it for only 14-20 times a year therefore its battery will last until 4-6 years.

Kindle doesn't have a back light so you can't read it in the dark. The reason why Kindle doesn't have a back light is because it will keep you out from straining your eyes. The simple solution to this problem is to buy a small light that can be clipped to your Kindle case and comfortably reading it.

Amazon Kindle How-to Series: Learn to Access the "secret" Functions in Kindle 1

Amazon has built a number of different features into the Kindle that never made it to the menus you use to access your e-books and audio books. You can do everything from make screen shots of your Kindle screen to find your location on Google Maps using the WhisperNet wireless technology in the Kindle.

NOTE- the features discussed here are for the Amazon Kindle 1 device. The Kindle 2 device available after February 24, 2009 likely will have different keyboard accessible features.

To access these features you will use a combination of keys on your Kindle's keyboard. Most all of the features begin by pressing the <ALT> key which is the at the lower left-hand side of your Kindle keyboard. You also may have to press the <SHIFT> key which is directly above the <ALT> key and has an upright arrow symbol. Here are a few of the special features you can access:

1. Play a game of Minesweeper on your Kindle - From the Home Screen press the<ALT> key and the <SHIFT> key and then the <M> key to access a basic Minesweeper game. The Minesweeper menu lets you control the grid size and the number of mines you have to find.

2. Find-out the time - From the Kindle Home Screen press the <ALT> key and the <T> key. The page number display (i.e. 1 of 3) at the bottom left of your Kindle screen will change to a time display.

3. Find-out the time - From the Kindle Reader Screen (i.e. while reading and e-book) press the <ALT> key and the <T> key. The "Locations" display at the bottom left of your Kindle screen will change to a time that is in text vs. numeric format. For example 1:31 is "Twenty-nine till two".

4. Take a "screen shot" of your Kindle screen - From any screen press the <ALT> and <SHIFT> key, then the <G> key. You won't get any notification that a screen-shot has been taken but you will find the screen shot on your Kindle's SD card. The Kindle won't save screen shots to its internal memory.

5. Find your current location - Open the Kindle's browser - Menu > Experimental > Basic Web then press the <ALT> key and the <1> key. Google Maps will open with your location shown. Your location is "triangulated" from the WhisperNet wireless access built into the Kindle so it's not entirely accurate. But you can zoom in and out on the map to get a better idea of where you are - this gets you in the ball park.

6. View your e-book as a slide show - From the Kindle's e-book reader press the <ALT> key and <0> key to turn on the slide show capability. Then press the <ALT> key and <1> key to start the slide show. Press the <ALT> key and the <2> key to turn the slide show off. Press the <ALT> key and the <0> key again to disable the slide show capability.

7. Control the Kindle audio player - Press the <ALT> key and <P> key to play or stop the audio player. Press the <ALT> key and the <F> key to advance to the next track.

8. Reboot your Kindle - If you Kindle has been acting a bit "flakey" you can do a soft reboot by pressing the <ALT> key and the <SHIFT> key then the <R> key.

The eight features listed above should give you an idea of the capabilities that are "hidden away" in your Kindle. Some of them will make your Kindle experience a bit better, and some will help you when you're trying to trouble shoot problems with your Kindle. Keep this list handy so when you get tired of reading your favorite e-book or listening to your favorite audio book you can give them a try.

The internet is quickly filling up with various Amazon Kindle reviews. Everyone seems to have an opinion on this slim, electronic device that is changing the way we look at reading. The term bookworm is quickly becoming obsolete, because people no longer have their noses stuck in dusty paperbacks. Amazon Kindle's Ebooks are starting to outsell print and it makes perfect sense because it's so easy.

You can now purchase one of 600 000 titles without leaving your bed. Simply reach over and grab your Kindle to have instant access to almost any book in your mind. The texts are downloaded onto your Kindle for less than the retail price in bookstores. Buying a Kindle makes financial sense because every book that you download will save you a few dollars and if you are into the classics, you can get many for free.

A brand new Kindle will cost you from $189 to $379, depending on which model you decide to buy. The cost of the device might seem a little steep, but the reasonable pricing of Ebooks still makes it a sound economic decision in the long run.

One of the greatest features attributable to the Kindle is that it is small and portable. You can store as many as 3500 books on the Kindle DX (the latest version) and take these with you wherever you go. The travelling reader no longer has to sacrifice baggage space for reading material, because the Kindle weighs only 1.2lbs. In the electronic age it has become possible to carry an entire library under your arm.

Choosing books is also easier and more reliable with the help of Amazon. The company has developed a fool-proof review system which allows registered Customers to comment on any purchase that they have made. No longer are our decisions directed by sales assistants who haven't read the book. Neutral third parties provide an excellent means by which the buyer can gather information and make a prudent decision.

Prospective buyers have expressed some concern regarding battery-life. There are very few Amazon Kindle reviews that have even made any mention of battery-life and this has accentuated the worry to some extent. In reality, any criticism leveled at the Kindle on account of battery life would be unwarranted, because the Ebook reader lasts for one week. Even the most avid reader has to sleep at some point and one week should provide a large enough window for charging.

The way we read is changing rapidly. The Kindle provides people with instant access to reading material for much cheaper than the retail prices in bookstores. The internet is filling up with Amazon Kindle reviews because it is the most recent development in the progression of the electronic environment.

Since 2007, three million people have purchased an Amazon Kindle and the rate of new ownership doesn't seem to be slowing down. Kindle owners have been given access to the modern method of reading and it wouldn't be presumptuous to suggest that in the near future all books might be prefixed with the letter E.'

Innovative new Amazon . com Kindle Review available

Needless to say, this Kindle ebook reader is without question getting to be a way of living these days. You'll find it's perhaps thought to be cool to be seen leafing through one about the public transit or in a nearby restaurant. By using one, you might never exhaust your books to go through. Additionally there is a huge amount relating to Kindle user reviews on the net to boot. Therefore, if you love to study a lot of novels in tandem, here's your fortunate moment. They are making their route through school districts shortly wherever common paper catalogs have been historicaly safeguarded. Regardless of how your perception is, despite exactly who you really talk with, the Kindle reader is very much set up to remain.

From one Kindle review to the other, the product might be termed a highly advanced mobile digital ebook reader which is on live access together with Amazon on-line book shops in addition to amenities all over north america. Kindles comprise the foremost product base for all of Amazon . com e-book marketplace. I would say the impressive component is they actually keep the usual sensation and presentation using the ordinary print paper.

Apart from the visual appearance, which this specific reading device provides lots of, the brand-new model Kindle will also be packed with extraordinary practical functionality. Their styling is literally exceptional as well, being previously flushed away from just about any weak points the original rendition sustained. This kind of manufacturing marvel has been packed straight into an item involving attractiveness and additionally overall performance with smartly designed keys, smooth functional controls, traditional keyboard along with classy over-all layout.
Obviously if the Kindle seems wonderful and grabs all of the accolades, it really is a reward, not the original idea. But actually, it's supposed to simply disappear directly into reading. Like a good classic publication, it's the well known judging the information and never the cover yet what the heck! It really is a lucky star all over again relating to Amazon . com. Needing this mentioned, typically the technological know-how pre-installed in to the Kindle is certainly surely worth a mention.

The actual hallmark characteristic within the Kindle viewer is probably their Whispernet wifi support.I cannot end up with a kindle review and leave out the actual wireless network services. To this point, I think it happens to be the one ebook reader backed up with this kind of capability. Viewing devices are in continual touch with the bookstore and also subscriptions plus synchronized with other products connected with their own Kindles as a result of the Whispersync provider and all of that at no cost via Amazon . com. This service plan is in fact operated by way of 3g solutions therefore it doesn't need to be inside any hotspot area to be useful.

A good number of Kindle review web sites will never neglect to speak about two things: the cost along with the size of the collection. At a cost belonging to the greater part of $ 400, maybe it's steep for quite a few but if you are hooked on reading, the 300,000 plus ebooks for kindle available will undoubtedly be sold at a reduced rate. Whether or not it's worthwhile the dollars or simply not is surely an individual factor of course , if Amazon . com have their course of action, any sort of book that is ever written will likely be offered as ebooks for Kindle in the future. It really is a great number of ebooks folks and that is my best ebooks for kindle review.

It was also mentioned that the SD-card slot of Kindle should not have been hidden behind its back cover. However, users love the capabilities of its battery.

A number of good reviews about this device are noticeable. To mention one, it has the best button layout that was designed. Its home button is said to be the best button because a single click to that will allow you to check the main list page of all your content. Kindle Review

Kindle is one of the latest eBook readers from Amazon. It is leaner and it is also costs less compared to other models. If you are thinking about getting an eBook reader, it is important to read a kindle review to learn about the features it offers. This new product offers an enhanced battery life and it is possible to connect it using 3G and Wi-Fi. It has improved greatly compared to the previous generation and there are only a few features that have remained unchanged. If you are a bookworm, you will find the Kindle 3G to be an effective product.

There are some major design changes on the Kindle 3G. It is thinner compared to the previous generations and it also weighs less. It measures about 8.7 ounces in weight and its dimensions are 7.5x4.8x0.34 inches. Its back has a soft coating unlike the metallic one on previous models. The Off slider has been moved to the bottom part of the device and this makes it less convenient for users. The other features that are also found on the bottom of the device include volume toggle, headphone jack and microUSB port. From the Kindle 3G review, you will also learn that the buttons found on the device's side are now more streamlines and smaller.

Its page turn buttons have also changes and they now measure about 0.16 inches in thickness. This change has not affected the ease of use on this product. You can press them easily and they have a firm feel. The manufacturers have also placed Previous and Next buttons on each side and this makes it easy for both right and left-handed users.

The Kindle now has directional pads instead of a joystick. The directional pad is found near the keyboard and this makes it easy to use. The keyboard is still easy to use but there is no number row. This means that if you want to access the numbers, you have to make use of the SYM button and select with the D-pad.

From the kindle 3 review, you will also learn that the new model has a darker contrast and this makes it easy for you to read. The darker contrast also makes it easier to view images. The images appear to be more crisp on this device. This means that you will also be able to read outdoors without straining your eyes.

The Kindle 3 also offers users more control when it comes to how text appears on the screen. You have 8 font sizes to select from just like the previous model but with the Kindle 3, there are three different typefaces including sans serif, condensed and regular. It is also possible to fit more text in a single page when you shorten the space that is between the words. The space between the lines can also be condensed to get more words in a single page. The Kindle 3 does not have an accelerometer but it is possible to change the orientation of the screen in four directions.

Does the Sony PRS600 Touch Edition EReader Have What it Takes to Challenge the Kindle 2?

Sony's new Touch Edition ereader is arguably the biggest current challenger to Amazon's Kindle 2. The following is based on my impressions after using the Sony PRS600 ereader for a few weeks. I also have a few opinions on how it compares to the Kindle 2.

First of all, let's list a few of the specs of Sony's new touch screen ereader:

6" touch screen; 600 x 800 pixels; 8 gray scales

Freehand note taking and annotating, highlighting; use included stylus or virtual keyboard

512 MB memory onboard will hold up to 350 ebooks

Accepts Memory Stick Pro Duo or SD card

Single font adjustable to five sizes

Battery lasts for up to two weeks or 7,500 page turns

Built-in dictionary

Available in silver, black or red

Formats supported: PDF, Adobe Digital Editions, epub, mp3, Microsoft Word files, BBeB

The PRS 600 comes with a neoprene carry bag. You would probably want to get a good cover though, as the included carrying bag does not provide much protection. You also get a USB cable to connect to your computer and a quick start guide. If you want an AC adaptor you will need to purchase that separately. You can probably do without though as eInk based ereaders like this one have very good battery life. A full charge does take about four hours, during which time the ereader must be connected to your powered on computer's USB port.

Sony also announced a few new features to go with their new ereaders. For one thing, Sony eBook Store software is now Mac compatible. In addition Sony ebook readers will be supporting Adobe Digital Editions, which means you can purchase ebooks from sources other than the Sony eBook Store. Ebooks in the Sony eBook Store will also be offered in Adobe Digital Editions so that owners of other ebook readers can purchase ebooks from Sony if they are also compatible with ADE. Finally, you will be able to borrow ebooks from public libraries that use Overdrive as their supplier for digital media.

Being able to check out ebooks from your local library and read them on your ereader sounds like a really good feature, but at the current time it is somewhat limited. Most libraries only have a few titles to choose from. The Los Angeles Public Library system for example only has a little more than 200 titles at this time; and that is a large library system. Libraries also have a finite number of "copies" of each title so most ebooks will have a waiting list to get on before you can check one out.
The Sony PRS 700, which the Sony Touch Edition replaces, was notorious for its bad glare which made reading outdoors or in bright light difficult. This is a common problem with touch screens, as is reduced contrast. The PRS 600 is not quite as bad as the PRS 700, but there is some glare. Contrast is also not as good as on most ereaders without touch screens. When reading outdoors I found the Touch Edition to be quite readable in either full sun or full shade. Where I had problems was in partial shade; it was hard to find an angle that did not show glare patterns on the screen. Indoors I found the worst glare when reading beside a table lamp, or when reading in bed with a side table lamp.

Glare issues aside, the touch screen does make navigation easier. Page turns are accomplished by either using a finger swipe on the touch screen or by using the buttons at the bottom of the ereader. The finger swipe takes some getting use to. The Sony Touch is rather difficult to use with one hand while reading in bed. Sony could have made this easier by placing page turn buttons on the sides of the ereader rather than on the bottom.

The touch screen also comes in handy for taking notes and highlighting. You can use the stylus to scribble in the margins if you like. You can also make annotations on PDF's, but not while they are zoomed. The default PDF view is usually too small to read as a whole page is fitted onto the screen, which on the PRS 600 is a little small for this purpose. You can use the zoom-in function on PDF's and then pan the image around using your finger on the touch screen.

You also have the ability to group your ebooks together in "collections" of titles based on author, category, etc. You can only do this from the computer however, not from the ereader itself.

On the whole I have enjoyed using the Sony Touch Edition. There are, however, a couple of areas where I think it falls somewhat short when compared to the Kindle 2.

First of all is the not so small matter of content. If you remove the Google public domain ebooks from the Sony eBook Store you will be left with about 1/3 of the number of titles that the Kindle store has. Yes, you can purchase ebooks from other online ebook stores, but mostly they seem to have pretty much the same titles at similar prices. When I have compared ebook prices the Kindle store almost always is less expensive for a given title.

Then of course there is Kindle's wireless connection. Of course purchasing ebooks wirelessly is very convenient, but the wireless connection also makes the Kindle 2 much more versatile. If you want to research something you are reading you can access Wikipedia or search on the internet. The Kindle browser is a bit clunky, but if you need to access the net or check your email, it's there for you. For me this is a much more valuable feature than the touch screen. Sony has also announced the Daily Edition ereader, which should be out by the end of 2009 and should come with a wireless connection. However, Sony's wireless will only let you connect to the Sony eBook Store; no internet and no wireless connections to other ebook stores. At least that is the information that has been released about the Daily Edition so far.

In conclusion, I do like the Sony. I found the glare to sometimes be distracting, but not so bad as to be a deal breaker. You may feel differently though, so it might be a good idea to have a hands-on look if you have a Sony Style store near you. I think Kindle's wireless connectivity is a much more compelling feature to have than Sony's touch screen though. And unless you mainly want to read current bestsellers (which are mostly $9.99 everywhere) or Google's public domain offerings, you may find that you will have less reading material to choose from with Sony's ereaders than with a Kindle 2, and it will probably cost you more.
