Kindle DX Global Wireless Reviews

Different and Better

I have owned both Kindle 1 and Kindle 2, so I'm already committed to the basic idea: e-ink reading in a slim form factor with excellent connectivity to a large selection of books and subscriptions. I have come to rely on my Kindle experience, and it has seriously enhanced my reading.

The Kindle DX Global Wireless was not an obvious upgrade for me, but two features put me over the edge: the larger screen, and the native PDF reader. I now have the Kindle DX Global Wireless in my hands, and can report PROS, CONS, and NEUTRALS:

PROS:

-- the larger screen is a definite plus. I use the larger type size on my Kindle 2 (older eyes), and at this type size I get far more text per page on the Kindle DX Global Wireless. This makes the whole reading experience more book-like (and should be a boon to people who buy large-print books.)

-- the screen is also sharper and crisper than my Kindle 2 in a side-by-side comparison: the text is darker, and the contrast is much better, making for better visibility overall.

-- on a side note, the larger screen also makes it possible to read poetry on the kindle, even at large type sizes. On earlier Kindles, the smaller screen cut off lines, so that you would lose the sense of when the poet ended the line. On the Kindle DX Global Wireless, you can see the whole line exactly as the poet meant it, with the cut-off in the right spot.

-- the PDF reader works as advertised, and is extremely convenient. PDF documents appear on the Kindle DX Global Wireless exactly as they do on a computer screen. Moreover, you can drag and drop your documents directly to the device using the USB cable (or use the for-a-fee email if you absolutely must.) The only downside: at least for the documents that I've used so far, I cannot adjust the type size as I can with native Kindle documents.

-- screen rotation also works as advertised: it operates as a mild zoom on both graphics and text and offsets slightly the downside of not being able to adjust the typesize on PDF documents. One nice design touch: the four-way navigation stick introduced on the Kindle 2 is rotation-sensitive, and will move as expected relative to the screen rotation.

-- more of the device space is devoted to the screen, while the white plastic border around the screen seems to have shrunk, both in general and compared to the proportion of screen to plastic on the Kindle 2. I like this (but see below about the keyboard).

-- storage: I like the increase in storage space, and don't mind the lack of an external storage card. I can see some people having trouble with this, but only those folks who either a) must regularly carry around PDF documents totalling more than 3.5 GB of space or b) must have nearly 3500 books regularly at their fingertips. I fall in neither category.

CONS:

-- price: it's expensive, as you can tell pretty quickly. If you value the larger size, and the native PDF reader, these features may justify the roughly 30% premium you pay for the Kindle DX Global Wireless over the Kindle 2. In truth, the Kindle DX Global Wireless SHOULD cost more than the Kindle 2, and a 30% premium isn't unreasonable. But, for my money, Amazon should drop the price on the Kindle 2 to $300 or so, and charge $400 or a little less for the Kindle DX Global Wireless. Still, I bought it, and will keep it at this price.

-- one-sided navigation buttons: all of the buttons are now on the right side, and none are on the left. I'm a righty, so I shouldn't complain, but I found myself using both sides on the Kindle 2. Lefties have reason to complain, I think.

-- One-handed handling: I often read while I walk, with my Kindle in one hand, and something else in my other. Because of the button layout, this will be more difficult on the Kindle DX Global Wireless.

-- metal backing: I miss the tacky rubberized backing on my Kindle 1. When I placed my Kindle 1 on an inclined surface, it stayed in place. Not so my Kindle 2 and now my Kindle DX Global Wireless. This is not a complaint specific to the Kindle DX Global Wireless, but it's still there.

NEUTRALS (i.e. things worth noting):

-- weight: the Kindle DX Global Wireless is heavier, noticeably so. This is only an issue if, like me, you regularly use the kindle with one hand . . . and even so, it's still doable.

-- keyboard: the keyboard has 4 rows, and not 5: the top row of numbers from the Kindle 1 and 2 has been merged into the top qwerty row, so that numbers are now only accessible with an alt-key combination. The keys are vertically thinner too, so that the whole keyboard is no more than 1" tall (compared to over an 1.5" on the Kindle 2). At the same time, the keys themselves are a bit easier to press, a bit more protruding than on the Kindle 2. For someone with big fingers (like me), this will be a slightly harder keyboard to use, but only slightly.

That's all I can see. Overall, the pluses outweigh the minuses for me, and I'm satisfied with my purchase. I can now think of using my Kindle DX Global Wireless for work documents on a regular basis, because of the PDF reader. The screen size and screen rotation make the overall reading experience more immersive.

Overall, the Kindle DX Global Wireless feels more like text and less like device and comes closer to the stated goal of the Kindle: for the device to disappear, leaving only the joy of reading.

Which one Would you Choose? The Kindle 3 or the Nook?

e-Readers

e-Readers are becoming something of a sensation lately. The latest wireless reading devices are becoming more and more sophisticated and convenient to use. This trend, like so many others that we have witnessed over the past few years like in the music industry, threatens to change the way we read books, and the high street bookstore forever. An electronic reading device has progressed to the point of the user being able to download several books within a few seconds and not even have to leave the comfort of their armchair.

The most popular e-Readers to date are the Amazon Kindle, the Sony e-Reader and the Nook. The most popular one at the moment is Amazons Kindle.

The very latest Kindle (Kindle 3) is incredibly light (8.7ozs) and as thin as a pencil which makes it a joy to hold for long periods of time and unlike a computer, it won't get hot. The battery can last up to a whole month if used in the correct way and the font size can be adjusted.

A neat touch is that your Kindle is will actually "read" to you, should your eyes get tired or you are away from a suitable light source. (A special cover and miniature light are available). Amazons reading device has the ability to download out of copyright book of which there are hundreds of thousands, for free, these are mostly the classics like Robinson Crusoe'.

A brief look at the NOOK.

The Nook from Barns and Noble, did not make its appearance until after the Kindle. One of the most obvious differences between these two is the Nooks screen which is more impressive and has a colour LCD touch-screen, complete with personalized screensaver. But at 11.6ozs, it's noticeably heavier than Amazons offering and also a little bulkier and less convenient to carry around. Not only this, the battery will only last for 10 days.

One of the most popular innovations regarding the Nook, is its Lend an eBook' to friends and relatives. You can loan them books that you have enjoyed free of charge.

The Nook can store 1,500 books while the Kindle can store 3,500 both are astonishing and enough to satisfy the most avid of readers. The Nook is going to be marginally more expensive than the latter.

Conclusion

If you are looking for something which is going to do its purpose very well, then the kindle 3 is the best of the two, I think this is because of the increased battery time of a 30 days which is amazing and also because it is lighter and less of a problem when holding due to the weight. Storage capacity I don't think really matters because, 1,500 to 3,500 is still a massive amount which will take the average reader a very long time to read through anyway. Both the kindle and the Nook have a great impact of the environment due to the absence of cutting down thousands of trees to create books, there is no longer a need for this with this brand new technology which is coming to this generation.

Kindle-Type Airline Seat Back Ebook Reader Needed

During these long flights, you can sleep, read a book, watch a movie, close your eyes and listen to the music, or if you are lucky you meet someone really interesting to have a nice 5-7 hour conversation with. The challenge is packing a book you can read and not get tired of reading, one you have to carry through the airport and lug with your baggage, only you have to have it outside your carry-on before you pack it away.

Well, I have a solution to this dilemma!

I propose that the airlines put Kindle Readers into the seat backs of the airline seats. They can charge $2-3 to turn them on and they are pre-loaded with electronic books - all of the New York Times Best Sellers List, along with all the classics, and business titles.

The airline would save in weight as fewer people would carry on magazines and books, and every pound of weight helps for fuel efficiency, especially on longer-flights across oceans or non-stops across the US. Additionally the airlines could take out a half-an-inch between seat rows, and add one extra row of seats at the end. On a large narrow body play this is 4-6 additional seats, and 4-6 additional passengers and airfares.

Meaning they make more money, which is something airlines must consider, that is if they want to remain in business - especially considering the rise in jet fuel costs, union demands, additional costs in health care insurance, and the cost to invest in the latest models of new ultra-efficient composite airliners in the future. Even first-class could take out a couple of inches between seats and add an additional row, 2 more first class seats.

It makes sense that the airlines make a deal with Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Apple Computer (iPad eBook Reader), or Borders Bookstore. Indeed, everyone can win, especially use frequent travelers who read fast, and don't want to lug a lot of extra luggage on and off the plane.

The eBook seat back reader on aircraft could also be used for instructions in case of emergency, or to look at maps or information about the destination city, such as the lay-out of the airport, location for rent-a-cars, and places to eat. Advertising could thus, also be sold for these seat back eBook readers, and they hardly weigh anything, and would increase revenue on each flight for the airlines.

If you have been thinking of eBook or iPad applications, please let's talk, because this makes a lot of sense and dollars too.

Amazon Kindle Pros and Cons

The Amazon Kindle is probably the most well known ebook reading device avaiable today. Amazon has even released statements announcing that the Kindle now outsells paper books on their website. If you're not yet an owner of a Kindle, and you're thinking about buying one, there are some things you should consider before purchasing one.

Before we get into the pros and cons, I want to give you a few points that are more neutral. Just about every tech spec on the Kindle isn't significantly better or worse than any other current ebook reader available. The size and weight of the device are just about the same as other e-readers like the Sony Readers, Nook, Kobo, and BeBook. All of these devices use E-Ink screens, which are easier on the eyes than reading from a back-lit LCD screen, and cuts down on glare and battery drain. The amount of memory storage is similar to just about any other e-reader that you pick up, as is the length of time that the battery lasts. Finally, most e-readers come in WiFi and non-WiFi models, and with or without a 3G capability (for more money). None of these things are unique to the Kindle, but all are great aspects of ebook readers.
Now here is a simple list of pros and cons about the Kindle:

Pros

- The Kindle is currently one of the most inexpensive ebook reading devices, with the newest WiFi model selling at only $139.

- Amazon's ebook buying and downloading process is pretty easy to use. You can purchase ebooks directly on the Kindle and download them wirelessly. This eliminates the need to download the ebooks to your computer and then transfer to the device, and you don't have to use any special software.

- The Kindle gives you easy access to many public domain ebooks for free. Some other readers will give you these in bundles, and others will allow you to read them if you find them on your own. With the Kindle you can grab them on Amazon.com just like the paid ebooks.

Cons

- Amazon is very restrictive about the content that you can put on your Kindle. It will only read Kindle ebooks purchased from Amazon.com, in the special .azw format.

- Because of this file format restriction, the Kindle can not use any books from your local library.

- Further to this restriction, the Kindle can not read any ebooks sold at any other ebook websites, unless the files are PDF or Mobipocket with no DRM, which is hard to find because most book publishers require DRM on their ebooks.

As you can see, when you take away all of the aspects that are not unique to the kindle (size, weight, screen, memory, WiFi, etc) there are only a few qualities left that make it different from the other available ebook readers. However, these qualities can significantly affect where and how you purchase your ebooks. My moral of this story is: don't purchase an electronic gadget just because it carries the most recognizable name -- Amazon's method might be perfect for you, but it might not.

Amazon Squares Up To Apple: Kindle Vs Ipad

It had to happen. Apple's foray into the eBook market with its iPad had to get a reaction from Amazon, but nobody quite expected the severity of this reaction. Amazon has responded amazingly strongly and in several different ways.

1. Kindle Apps

Prior to the iPad launch, Amazon made the announcement of the opening of an applications store, and an invitation for developers to come up with apps in the same way that they did for the iPhone and the iPad. This was an apparent attempt to offer the Kindle as a genuine competitor to the iPad.

Without some other use of the Kindle other than as a dedicated e-reader, Amazon knew that it was destined to suffer a knock-out blow from Apple. It is not easy to fight Apple's commercial and financial resources, but it can be done given the right strategy. One tactic of that strategy is to emulate what Apple has achieved in the versatility of their products, and by developing applications for the Kindle, Amazon is doing that: and taking the first step on the road to genuine multimedia capability for the Kindle.

This might conceivably be the beginning of a larger war between the two giants, involving not only eBooks, but also music, movies and all the other miscellaneous applications that have come to be associate with the iPhone and, no doubt, the iPad.

2. DRM Drop-Out

Amazon made DRM optional for publishers. With iBooks locked by FairPlay, Amazon's DRM opt-out means that users can port their eBooks to other e-readers. DRM is now optional for publishers, and while that is not a great advance for the majority of Kindle owners, it is for the smaller publishers who will now have more of an incentive to market the Kindle. It is one more in the eye for Apple, and another small advantage that Amazon is trying to gain over the iPad. According to the article "An Introduction to Popular E-book File Formats", with its own Digital Rights Management structure AZW format protects the e-book publishers and authors from possible piracy and is loosely based on Mobipocket's popular MOBI file format (Digital Book Readers).

3. Price Maintenance

Amazon took steps to protect the low prices of Kindle eBooks by maintaining a maximum price of $9.99 on all its publications. It is the only e-reader that does not allow publishers to apply higher pricing, and it responded to Macmillan's pressure by removing all that publishers products from its virtual library. Yes, Amazon has stated that these will be reinstated, but that has yet to happen, and Macmillan meantime has been subject to insults from Amazon on public forums.

This move was likely made in response to criticism that eBooks are too expensive in relation to their production costs and overheads. By sustaining a price ceiling of $9.99, Amazons maintains a level of competitiveness that other e-readers will find it hard to match, including Apple.

4. Touchco Acquisition

Each of the above three will have an influence on the outcome of the bout between Amazon and Apple, but much more significant is Amazon's acquisition of Touchco, the e-paper and touchscreen technology firm. This appears to be Amazon's ace in the hole, and the acquisition must have come as shock and a blow to Apple.

Touchco had been working on a true multi-touch screen to work with e-paper that enables unlimited simultaneous touches to be detected. Combined with the Mirasol multi-color technology on e-paper, this offers Amazon the ability to create a multi-touch color tablet device that could very easily not only compete with the iPad, but also exceed its technological capability. It is definitely a big one in Apple's eye, and the gloves are definitely off now.

The acquisition took place very secretively and quietly, and nobody had an inclination of what was going on. It is hard to believe that Apple was unaware of it, but it sure seems that way. Round 1 might have been Apple's, but Amazon has certainly won rounds 2, 3 and 4, although knowing Apple's resilience and resources, certainly not with knockout blows.

The Touchco technology might have been used with e-paper to develop cell phones, music players and a whole host of possible applications, but that is now lost in Amazon's fight with Apple for the e-reader market. Sometimes it is time for corporations to focus on their core business, because this type of infighting almost invariably ends up with no winners and the public the losers.

However, what can we look for in the near future? Likely an expansion of the Kindle, or a variant, as an iPad competitor, and almost certainly the demise of the clunky E Ink and the development of a sleeker display medium. Watch this space and get ready for round 5, because Apple will certainly not take this lying down!

Kindle PDF Conversion: How to Convert PDFs for the Amazon Kindle

Kindle PDF Conversion: How to Convert PDFs for the Amazon Kindle

With the release of the Kindle DX, Amazon finally gave an answer for the Kindle PDF queries that flooded the internet. With the Kindle 2, there is no native PDF file support. Try to load a PDF and you get nothing. Amazon's first solution was to offer file conversion for a minimal fee. You simply send them your PDF and they will convert it to run on your Kindle. However, this led to many people wondering why they should pay to have every PDF converted. There had to be a way to do it yourself. Turns out that there is a way, but it still isn't perfect.

One thing you should know about the Kindle is that while it does not recognize PDF files, it can read PRC files. So what we're essentially doing here is to convert the original documents into files that are recognized by the device. If you're using a PC, the Mobipocket Creator is one of the programs that you can use for the conversion process, while if you're Mac user, you can use Stanza. The end result is the same.

The conversion process that you would need to go through using the Mobipocket Creator is a relatively simple one. Just open the program, select the import file option, then browse your PC and click on the PDF file you wish to have converted. Then select the HTML created and click on the build button. Depending on the file size, the build process can be done quickly enough, and in the end you get the file format that you need. Errors may come up during the conversion process but you can just ignore these. The file you get may be readable on the Kindle but it's not a perfect copy and some elements may be lacking like a table of contents.
If you are on a Mac, Stanza makes the process even easier. Simply find your file in the database and choose the Export Book As option. You will see that Amazon Kindle is one of the conversion choices.

You should note that these file conversions are not always perfect. As stated earlier, you will not get a table of contents standard with the conversion. The program comes with the option to create one, however. If your PDF is large or you need it to be properly organized, it might be worth your time to build a table of contents yourself. You may also experience some clunky conversion sectors, but they shouldn't make the document illegible. If everything goes smoothly, you should end up with a readable Kindle PDF document.

There is always the option of e-mailing your documents in to have them converted, but it can be expensive over time and takes a while for the document to get back to you. If you're more interested in doing it yourself, these are just two programs that have the ability to convert the files. There may be other programs, even better programs, but you will have to do some searching to find the one you like the most. If you are just looking for a Kindle PDF conversion, these programs make it easy enough for anyone to handle.

Get the detailed instructions for Kindle PDF Conversion here! If being able to read PDF files on your ebook reader is essential but you don't want the hassle of converting files, then consider the Kindle DX. Visit us to see the DX in action and you'll find out why this is one of the hottest readers today.

The Most Important Uses For Your Survival Knife

When it comes to using your Survival Knife, proper education is a must. Read whatever you can about survival skills, watch videos and sign up for classes at your local outdoor store. Education not only ensures your safety but also makes you efficient when using your survival knife. There are 4 important things you can use your survival knife for and you should learn how to do all 4 to ensure your survival if the need arises.

Hunting

Should you have the need, your survival knife can be used to fashion weapons like spears or arrows to hunt food or even fish hooks to catch fish with. You can use your knife to make traps or snares to catch your food. And of course you need a knife to skin or clean your catch to prep it for eating. You can also use your Survival Knife to round up edible plants if your hunting/trapping skills aren't up to par or just have a hankering for a side salad to go with your possum. If you can't sign up for hands on training to learn these skills then you should at least watch videos, or purchase a book. Being able to acquire food in a survival situation is hugely important. If you can't obtain food sources then none of your other survival skills will matter. Sure you can last weeks without food, but lack of food will bring in a number of side effects like weakness, disorientation, confusion and physical weakness to name a few. In other words bad things are more likely to occur when you can't feed yourself and I'm not talking about a case of the Mondays.

Build a Fire

Being able to build a fire is very important. You need to be able to cook the animal or fish you heroically captured. You can use your Survival Knife to cut branches for firewood, collect kindling or make shavings to use as tinder. You can even use a carbon steel blade using what's called the "spark-rod" method to create a spark. Again if you can't sign up for local classes to learn how to make a fire, then read or watch a video and practice, practice, practice. When you're stuck in a survival situation, that is not the time to rehearse making a fire. You don't need to be the guy who can start a fire by massaging some spit between the palm of his hands, but you won't regret learning the skill to make fire using your Survival Knife. At the very least you can amaze your friends who like fire.

Self Defense

Self defense doesn't necessarily mean you have to hide Rambo style against a wall of mud and slice someones neck, commando style. You can use your survival knife to create traps or weapons that help keep distance between you and whatever is trying to put a hurting on you. Of course a survival knife can cause some damage of it's own, however training is as important as ever when it comes to using a knife in self defense. Hacking and slashing wildly probably isn't going to be too effective. If you're sincere about self defense then I recommend you take classes that teach close quarters combat. Try to find some that will address the use of weapons like knives. This can be a great skill even outside of a "lost in the woods" survival condition.

Build Shelter

Building shelter is important for a number of reasons. A reasonable shelter can protect you from the elements, protect you and your gear from unwanted guests and can help keep that "great hair day" you're having, last a little longer. Again, you should read what you can, watch videos or take a local class on building a shelter if possible. Having a good survival knife by your side can help make this process much easier when you need to cut rope, branches and any other materials you are going to be using for your "fit for a king" survival shelter.

A few other things you can do with your Survival Knife might include, cutting or fashioning bandages to dress wounds properly. (First aid training wouldn't hurt either.) You might even be able to signal distress if your knife is shiny enough. Since you went and got training and are so good at the essential survival skills listed above, you will have plenty of time to carve miniature wooden figurines with all your spare time.

With a good Survival Knife you can make or secure just about anything you need to live and even prosper in the outdoors. Heck you might get so good at survival skills, you won't be in a hurry to get back to civilization.

Homeschooling on a Mission Field: A Blessing and A Challenge

Homeschooling on the Mission Field: A Blessing and a Challenge

By Pam Berglund

Indonesia is sandwiched between Australia and the Philippines in Southeast Asia. It is made up of more than 12,000 islands, many of which have their own languages, beliefs, and customs. Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world, but we are committed to reaching the most unreached people, those who live in remote tribes and villages and who have never had the opportunity to hear about the saving grace of Jesus. These people are not Muslim but are animist, which means they worship and live in fear of their ancestors.

My husband, Greg, and I, and our five children (Nate, age 12; Hannah, age 10; Grace, age 8; Katie, age 6; and Caleb, age 3) live in a town in central Indonesia where I homeschool our five children and give support to other homeschooling families in the region. My husband, Greg, is translating the Bible into the Buru language. The Buru people live to the south of us in the remote jungles of the island of Buru. Because of security and transportation issues, we have not been able to live in the tribe with the Buru people for several years, but Greg makes frequent trips to encourage the believers in Buru and to check the translation work. We are anticipating that some of those transportation issues will be resolved soon and that we will be able to make the move to one of the Buru villages this year.

Our life here in Indonesia looks very similar to a homeschooling family's life in the U.S. in many ways, but we also have many opportunities and blessings and even some struggles and challenges that the typical homeschooler in the U.S. doesn't face. We miss parks, libraries, museums, and the opportunity to take part in homeschool co-ops and community activities. We miss the passing of the seasons and the feeling of truly fitting in and belonging somewhere. Even more than that we miss grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. On the other hand we are able to do things here with our kids that we would never have opportunity to do in the States. We can go snorkeling right on the Great Barrier Reef, hike through jungles, visit ancient ruins, and look into the mouth of a volcano. Our children have been to many countries and are growing up protected, in a sense, from some of the prevailing American culture. They are seeing firsthand the poverty that much of the world experiences and also the amazing resilience and creativity of people with so little material goods and opportunities. I love the fact that my kids are able to explore and are constantly finding huge beetles and odd bugs or rescuing tropical baby birds. They hunt for gecko eggs and watch them hatch and hack open coconuts to drink the coconut juice inside.

Probably my biggest challenge living overseas as far as homeschooling goes is the absence of libraries and garage sales and the painfully slow and expensive shipping. I have become very adept at turning to the Internet to find materials and tend to choose curriculum that can be reproduced and used for all my children. I also buy as much as I can in ebook format. We have added a continuous-flow ink system on our printer and are able to print very cheaply. We also have just been given Kindle ebook readers as gifts, which I am hoping will make the buying and shipping of books less of an issue, at least for the older, voracious readers in our family.

I use a modified version of Sue Patrick's Workbox System to organize our schoolwork. Last year I was also teaching our co-worker's two children and had six children in five grades . . . plus a 2-year-old! I found that workboxes were a lifesaver, helping us to organize our materials and giving form and structure to our day. This year, with just my children, I have adapted it a little more by having only six workboxes per child, as well as a "family" workbox unit in which we keep all the books and supplies for the subjects we do together, such as science, Bible, and history.

Because we had other students coming each day, last year we got into a strict 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. school schedule. We like to keep to that if possible, but with a little more flexibility this year, we often find ourselves finishing up a few extra subjects in the afternoons. We also have a sports day once a week, when we get together with other MKs (missionary kids) to play sports. Recently the kids have also had the opportunity to learn to care for and ride horses twice a week.

I would describe myself as an eclectic homeschooler. We have several curricula that are such a good fit for our family that we keep returning to them year after year. For Bible we use Foundations by Anne's Homeschool Place (available at CurrClick). We like the chronological approach and how easy it is to use. The kids also work through Awana books at their own level. Math-U-See is by far our favorite math curriculum, and we have used it for all but our first year of homeschooling. We love how easy it is to use and how well concepts are explained. The Story of the World has also been a good fit for our family, and we are now on year three.

We ship a box or two of books over each year. Those books, together with corresponding literature I find online, in our home library, and in our little MK library here make up our literature curriculum for the older kids. We are using Artistic Pursuits this year for art and are really enjoying it. We use a wide array of different resources for language arts, including Wordsmith Apprentice and Spelling Power. We round out our studies with free resources I have found or inexpensive online resources. I often take a week off from our regular studies around different holidays to do unit studies; I find it keeps everyone's enthusiasm up if we switch things up occasionally.

I guess one of the basic themes of our lives as homeschooling, overseas missionaries is adaptability. We have to be creative to find ways to meet the needs of each of our children, as well as to deal with the changes and interruptions that come our way. Through it all I pray my kids are learning to live for Christ, follow His will, and be open to the circumstances He brings their way.

Pamela Berglund and her husband Greg serve as missionaries in Indonesia with New Tribes Mission. There she homeschools their five children and assists and encourages other parents who are homeschooling on the mission field. You can find out more about how to pray for and encourage them at their website: www.ntm.org/greg_berglund.

Best Tablets 2011 Reviews

Tablets are the technology's industry's latest gold rush. With Apple selling 15 million iPads in 2010 and projected to sell as many as 45 million in 2011, everyone wants a piece of the public's sudden infatuation with multitouch slabs of silicon. From the world's biggest computer companies to obscure little parts makers, there are an obscene number of companies releasing tablets this year.

1. Apple iPad 2

The iPad remains the king of the category and, even with the invasion of an army of challengers, it's difficult to see a scenario in which the iPad won't retain a commanding market share lead when we get to the end of 2011. It still has too many factors in its favor: usability, battery life, a massive catalog of apps, and price. The last factor might be the most important. In 2010, price was the iPad's greatest marketing weapon as rivals had a very hard time meeting the iPad's price tag while offering a comparable experience. The iPad 2 doesn't offer any revolutionary new changes. It's thinner and lighter, has an upgraded processor and display, and adds front and rear cameras. It's a nice refinement, and with its big advantages in app and content libraries, it easily has enough value to keep it at the top of the list.

2. HP TouchPad

I think we can safely call this one the "X factor." Even afterHewlett-Packard officially unveiled its webOS tablet on February 9, there are still two big questions hanging out there when exactly will it arrive ("summer" is all we know) and how much will it cost? This product has been in the works since HP bought Palm last summer. Putting the resources of HP behind the massive potential of webOS could be great combination. Also, don't forget that HP has a decade of experience building tablet hardware even if it was as part of the long defeat for Microsoft's Tablet PC. HP's new TouchPad is 9.7-inch tablet with lots of high-end features, but it doesn't have much to distinguish it from Apple or Android and that could hurt. The tablet will likely succeed or fail based on price. If it is comparable to the iPad ($500) while offering a stronger feature-set, it has a shot. If it's more expensive than the iPad then it could struggle. Still, the WebOS is a natural fit for tablets and the TouchPad could potentially trump the iPad in true multitasking, better integrated notifications, and messaging.

3. The Amazon tablet

Amazon appears to be putting all the pieces in place to build its own Android tablet. In fact, it may be better positioned to compete with Apple than any of the other tablet makers because of its strengths in content and cloud computing. Amazon already had the Kindle e-book library and Web-based music and video stores, but in 2011 it has added the Amazon Appstore for Android andAmazon Cloud Drive. Plus, the word out of Asia is thatAmazon is prepping a low-cost tablet using an E-ink display. Amazon hasn't made any announcements yet, so this tablet benefits from lots of positive speculation, but the stars appear to be aligning for aformidable tablet product from the world's e-commerce king, which will likely price it low and make money off the content sales.

4. BlackBerry PlayBook

I was at the event last fall where RIM announced the BlackBerry PlayBook and myfirst impressions were not very good mostly because RIM kept it behind glass. However, after getting my hands on the final product, I was a lot more impressed. ThePlayBook looks like it could become a factor in the tablet market, especially for businesses that are already invested and committed to the BES backend infrastructure. This is a 7-inch tablet, so that limits its appeal a bit except for the vocal minority who like the smaller form factor. Still, the hardware feels great, the tablet OS is easy to figure out, and the performance is staggeringly good. BlackBerry die-hards alone could turn this one into a winner. It's also the best tablet for Web browsing because of its excellent implementation of Flash.

5. ASUS Eee Pad Transformer

ASUS believes that the iPad has two weaknesses lack of choice and limited productivity (content creation) so that's where the company is focusing its energy in tablets. At CES, ASUS unveiled its line of four tablets, and three of them were aimed at content creators. The most interesting was the Eee Pad Transformer, a 10-inch tablet with a dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU that runs Android 3.0. The most innovative thing about this one is that it has an optional keyboard dock that also functions as an extended battery, giving the device up to 16 hours of life. ASUS has pulled off an Android tablet that also doubles as a laptop when the Transformer is in dock mode. Plus, the price is right. At $399, this tablet is one of the best values on the market, so it's no surprise that it it sold out in the US on its first day of online sales.

6. B&N Nook Color

The Barnes & Noble Nook Color e-readerrecently got an update to Android 2.2 and its own app store, which has turned it into a viable low-cost tablet. Some will argue against it since it has a heavy-handed UI forced on top of Android and doesn't run the full Android Market app store. But, I couldn't leave this little 7-inch tablet off the list. It has a great form factor thin and easy in the hands and you can't beat the price at $249. Plus, if you're highly technical, you can hack it into a full Android tablet.

7. Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9

The original Samsung Galaxy Tab was a 7-inch tablet that jumped the gun on Android tablets before Google was ready but it also offered the first legitimate challenge to the iPad. If it wasn't so expensive ($600), it might have faired even better than the respectable sales numbers that it posted. Samsung's second try at the tablet market looks a lot more potent. Running the official Android tablet OS this time, Samsung is preparing to launch 8.9-inch and 10.1-inch versions of the Galaxy Tab in mid-2011. The 8.9-inch model could prove to be the most attractive, since it's a little smaller than the 10-inch tablets like the iPad and the Xoom, which can beslightly awkward to hold and enter data. Plus, the Samsung Galaxy Tab has a great price tag $439 for the Wi-Fi model andSamsung is making these tablets very friendly for enterprise buyers.

8. HTC Flyer

Half of the tablets on this list are powered by Android and HTC is one of the powerhouses of the Android ecosystem. Unlike rivals Motorola, Samsung, and LG, who all unveiled high-end tablets at CES 2011, HTC was remarkably silent on the tablet question in Vegas. However, the company officially announced its first tablet a month later at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It is the HTC Flyer and it's a 7-incher with 1.5 GHz CPU, 1.0 GB RAM, 32GB of Flash storage, an attractive unibody design, and a special version of the HTC Sense UI designed for tablets. Unlike most of the other Android tablets, the Flyer also includes digital ink technology and a stylus. However, the Flyer will not run Android 3.0. Instead, it will launch with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Given the problems with Honeycomb and HTC's strong track record with its Sense UI, this could be a very usable little tablet.

9. Motorola Xoom

When Google is ready to make a leap forward with Android, it anoints a hardware partner to work closely with the company on the new software and produce a device that will be an initial concept vehicle of what Google envisions. For its Android 3.0 tablet OS, Motorola was the chosen one. And, interestingly enough, the Motorola Xoom was not only be the first Honeycomb tablet, but also the first tablet to run on Verizon's new 4G LTE superhighway. This 10-inch widescreen tablet has drool-inducingtech specs but the Android tablet software is incomplete and desperately needs more apps. The other big drawback is the price. It retails for $799 without a contract. Even the Wi-Fi version is $599. It will be tough to justify that price until Google cleans up Honeycomb and gets app builders on board.

10. Samsung Sliding PC 7

A Windows 7 tablet that is legitimately intriguing is Samsung's Sliding PC 7. It looks like a normal 10-inch tablet, but includes a slide-out keyboard that turns it into a fully functional laptop. The hardware manages to deftly combine slimness with keyboard usability, based on the demo at CES. For those who don't want to carry both a laptop and a tablet, hybrid devices like this could carve out a new niche. This one has a 1366768 screen, up to a 64GB solid state drive, 2GB of RAM, and built-in 3G and WiMAX chips. Since it runs all of that hardware and the full version of Windows, battery life will be a concern. It also costs $650 and tablets over $600 have not been very well received by the public.
