What's The Best Ebook Reader? Nook vs. Kindle vs. Sony Reader vs. Kobo

It seems every day there are more and more options for choosing an ebook reader. It becomes more and more confusing to choose the best ebook reader for your needs with all the new models available. Let's compare four of the most popular, the Nook vs Kindle vs Sony Reader vs Kobo.

Let's do a simple comparison of some of the basic features of memory, battery life, and other stand-out unique features of each ebook reader.

Nook- The Nook is the only of these devices to offer any sort of color experience, having a 1 inch high color touch navigation screen. The memory capacity of the device is comparable to the other 3 readers with the ability to store up to 1,500 books and titles. However, the memory is expandable to allow more titles with the insertion of an SD card. Battery life is extended to 10 days with the wireless function turned off.

There are two models available, the WiFi only and WiFi + 3G models. 3G wireless service doesn't work in foreign countries.

Kindle 3- The Kindle 3 is the latest updated version of Amazon's ebook reader. Memory capacity is 3,500 books as a standard. Memory is not expandable. The battery life is extended to 30 days with the wireless function turned off.

There are also two models of Kindle available with the WiFi only and WiFi + 3G.

Sony Reader Pocket Edition- Sony has a lot of Reader models, but we will be comparing the "Pocket Edition" because of the comparable price to the Nook, Kindle and Kobo.

The Pocket Edition is a smaller device than the other readers. The reading screen is 5" diagonal vs 6" diagonal, and the device is overall smaller. The memory of the device is 350 books and the battery life is up to 2 weeks reading time in between charges. It should be noted there is no wireless feature with the Sony Reader Pocket Edition. Instead, one hooks up to the computer with a USB to download books.

Kobo- The Kobo from Borders is a newer ebook reader to the market that is gaining some popularity. The Kobo also has a 6" E-Ink screen and has a comparable memory capacity of 1,000 books standard, but can be expanded with an SD card to more. Battery life allows for 2 weeks reading time in between charges.

The most sales have been reported by the Nook and Kindle over the 2010 holiday season and into the new 2011 year. Perhaps it is because of the slightly more robust features of these two ebook readers. Still, it is a close call and will come down to preference when comparing the Nook vs Kindle vs Sony Reader Pocket Edition vs Kobo.
